Breast Augmentation

Dr. Ziesmann offers a wide variety of customizations to the breast enlargement procedure that are designed to ensure that the results are best for each individual. Differences in the location of the incision, placement of the implant within the breast, implant size, and even implant filling material are tailored to your individual look and goals based on your consultation. The procedure is intended to give you the figure you want with minimal scarring for a natural body enhancement.

  • Patients must meet with Dr. Ziesmann to discuss their goals with the procedure so that a mutual understanding can be achieved before the surgery. After the procedure, patients typically wait 3 to 4 days before returning to work or their typical daily activities. However, others may choose to wait a full week for their personal comfort.

Full healing and reduction of swelling can take several weeks, during which patients are asked to meet with Dr. Ziesmann. He will ensure that they are satisfied with the procedure and are medically sound and comfortable. After approximately 3 to 4 weeks, most patients find that they are fully healed and can return to a typical daily schedule including exercise, moderate lifting, and a full range of arm movements.

During the recovery time, Dr. Ziesmann may prescribe medication to ease any discomfort. Non-medicinal recommendations will also be provided to aid in the proper healing of the surgical area.

Whether using saline or silicone fillings, breast enlargement is a procedure with a low rate of failures or complications. Any problem that you may experience is fully treatable.

Breast Lift

Mastopexy, commonly called a breast lift, is a procedure to tighten the skin that supports the breasts by surgically removing small portions of the skin. The breasts are supported by a single ligament that can stretch and loosen over time due to the effects of gravity. This problem is often worst in women who have nursed children or have large breasts.

  • Mastopexy is most successful with smaller breasts that require less tissue removal and will leave less scarring. It is not recommended for women who plan to become pregnant because nursing may undo the effects of the surgery. The procedure is also most successful in non-smokers, who report less visible scarring.

This procedure is a surgery that does carry with it the same risks as any surgical procedure conducted under anaesthetic. If you are concerned about drooping breasts as well as enlarged areolas or diminished breast size, this procedure can be combined with other procedures that are designed to provide patients with a complete breast enhancement.

Breast Reduction

For many women, breast reduction surgery can be a solution to problems such as poor posture, back, shoulder, or neck aches, headaches, shoulder indentations, or feelings of self-consciousness.

A breast reduction, known medically as a reduction mammoplasty, involves surgically removing a combination of fat, skin, and glandular matter from within and under the breasts. This procedure is designed to result in smaller, lighter, and tighter breasts.

  • Depending on individual wishes and aesthetics, your surgeon may also reposition or resize the areolas. In some cases, this procedure can damage the glands involved in milk production, and women may be able to breastfeed in the future.

The procedure does leave a visible scar, which will be positioned in most cases immediately below the nipples. The scarring may be minimized by illumiWave treatments.

The best candidates for reduction mammoplasty surgery are women who have reasonable expectations about the limits of surgery, and are satisfied that they will not be bothered by some possible scarring. It may take as long as 6 weeks for the breasts to fully heal with a reduction in swelling.

Most patients are able to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks, but a full range of motion and ability to endure strenuous exercise may take a month or even longer to regain. In most instances, a drain tube is used to collect fluid that may accumulate in the days following your surgery.

It is important to discuss this procedure thoroughly with your surgeon to understand the risks and benefits. Furthermore, it’s necessary to ensure that your doctor has a clear understanding of the goals for your future appearance.

Ear Surgery

While most ear surgeries are done on children under the age of 14 (when the ear stops growing), a significant number of adults also undergo the procedure. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a minor procedure that is designed to make the ears less prominent by having them lay more flat against the head. A small sliver of the ear is removed from the back so that the underlying cartilage can be folded or removed before the cut is stitched, pulling the ear gently back towards the head.

  • Otoplasty is a procedure with only minor potential side effects. Depending on the age of the patient and the extent of the desired change, this may be performed under either local or general anaesthetic. The procedure can take up to 2 weeks to heal fully, and scars are hidden behind the ear, out of sight.

Still physically demanding, high-contact sports are not advised for 3 months after the procedure. Immediately after the procedure, a bandage or piece of headgear may be prescribed to help the ears heal properly and with minimal stress to the incision. It can take up to a week before patients can return to work or school following otoplasty.

Other forms of otoplasty can include corrections to misshapen, injured, or even missing outer ears.

Face Lift

As we age, the effects of decades of gravity and sun exposure can cause the skin over our face to slacken. This creased, “jowled” appearance is often pointed to as a sign of aging. A facelift is designed to give patients a more youthful and healthy looking face that does not readily show the signs of exposure, which we associate with aging.

  • Known as a rhytidectomy in the medical community, a facelift literally lifts the skin of the face away from the underlying tissue. A surgeon can then reduce the appearance of tissue, such as fat deposits, to contour a more natural facial appearance. The skin is then reattached to the muscles underlying the face, and any excess skin is removed.

Heavy wrinkles and folds, such as pronounced jaw creases, are also removed. Typically, facelifts will not correct forehead wrinkles, excessively loose skin on the neck, or bags under the eyes to any degree. However, procedures to correct these features can often be combined with a facelift.

Facelifts can be performed under either a local or general anaesthetic, depending on the specific work that the surgeon feels needs to be done and how to reduce patient discomfort. While most patients report very little discomfort following a facelift procedure, it may take more than a week for most of the swelling of the face to recede.

Incisions (and subsequent stitches) are made behind the hairline so as not to be noticeable after surgery. Bruising of the face is usually minor but can be extensive in some patients. You should be prepared to be off work for up to 2 weeks after surgery to recover from the visible signs of the procedure.

Patients should avoid smoking for about 6 weeks before and after the procedure to ensure proper healing. After the procedure, the face may be numb, so it is important to be especially gentle to avoid harming the delicate skin on the face.

Any modifications to your face are extremely personal. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly discuss the procedure with Dr. Ziesmann so that both he and you are aware of your goals and expectations.

There are many nerves, muscles, and blood vessels in the face. Additionally, most patients desire quick healing for such a visible procedure. For these reasons, Dr. Ziesmann may ask patients to avoid certain activities, vitamins, or dietary supplements before and after the surgery.

Facial Implants

For patients who dislike aspects of their face—perhaps asymmetry or disproportionately large or small bone structure in the chin, jaw, or cheeks—the results of a facial implant surgery or facial cosmetic surgery can often be a positive investment in self-esteem. After all, the face is what we most associate with in other individuals, and it is where we derive many of our first impressions.

  • Facial implant surgery can be used to add to the contours of the face in places where we feel our bone structure is not sufficiently prominent. Implants to create a stronger chin can often be inserted in less than an hour and, depending on the patient’s facial features, the incision can often be placed inside the mouth to avoid visible scarring.

Cheek implants to raise the prominence of the cheekbones can also be inserted in about an hour. The incisions are often made inside the upper lip to avoid visible scarring.

Jaw implants can take up to 2 hours to insert through incisions placed inside the lower lip. This will result in a more distinct jaw line, connecting the chin to the ear.

Any of these procedures may also be combined with other facial surgeries, such as a facelift. This is done to minimize the total recovery time for a patient.

It is also possible to reduce the appearance of some material in the same locations as implants can be placed to give a less distinct appearance. However, because such procedures are personal to the unique patient’s features and wishes, they cannot easily be described here. If you would like more information about facial reductions, please contact our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ziesmann.

As with all surgeries of the face, bruising and swelling are unpredictable because all patients will respond differently. Generally, bruising is not significant beyond a week after the procedure, and swelling may take a month or longer to subside completely.

Patients should inform Dr. Ziesmann if they are smokers, have any teeth or gum problems, or are taking any medications (prescribed or otherwise, such as aspirin) prior to their surgery.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a technique used to sculpt the natural shape of fat deposits on the body. The liposuction surgery can be done almost anywhere a patient has unwanted fat deposits, including the thighs, abdomen, love handles, chest, arms, hips, buttocks, or even cheeks. The process is intended to reduce the appearance of adipose tissue, which is the type of tissue in the body responsible for storing fat.

  • Liposuction cannot be used as an alternative to weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. Instead, it is meant to augment the normal shape of the body’s fat storage sites.

Today’s liposuction techniques have been refined so that doctors can provide patients with more precise, refined surgeries to better accomplish exactly what the patient desires. Generally, the procedure is performed by making a small incision in an inconspicuous location. A vacuuming tube called a cannula is then used to break up and suck out the adipose tissues.

Before the procedure begins, the surgeon will inject a mixture of several chemicals into the site of the procedure to make the adipose tissue easier to reduce appearance without damaging surrounding areas. Improvements in this procedure include Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) and more recently the Waterjet, which uses water to mobilize the fat prior to suctioning it out.

Recovering from a liposuction treatment is highly dependent on the location and extent of the procedure. Bruising typically begins to subside within a week of surgery while swelling in the area may take several weeks or even months to fully subside.

Scars are present but are usually minimal and hidden as best as possible by the surgeon when making the necessary incisions. Most patients are advised to return to restrained movements as soon as possible after surgery, but take 4 to 7 days before returning to work (depending on the location and extent of the procedure).

Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover refers to a combination of cosmetic procedures aimed at restoring a woman's body after pregnancy and childbirth. It typically involves a combination of breast enhancement, tummy tuck, and liposuction procedures. However, the specific procedures can vary based on each individual's goals and needs.

  • The mommy makeover procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make incisions strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. The exact incision patterns and techniques used will depend on the specific procedures being performed.

Breast enhancement procedures, such as breast augmentation or breast lift, aim to restore volume and shape to the breasts. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, helps remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscles to achieve a flatter and more toned appearance. Liposuction may be used to remove stubborn pockets of fat in various areas of the body.

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedures performed. It is important to follow post-operative instructions carefully, which may include restrictions on physical activities, wearing compression garments, and attending follow-up appointments.

The procedure starts with a an in-office consultation During the consultation, Dr. Ziesmann will assess your specific concerns and goals, He will then discuss and recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Mole Removal

Mole removal is a simple procedure that is done under local anaesthetic and typically takes well under an hour. Moles should be examined by a physician prior to removal. However, if your mole has changed in any way (colour, shape, size, etc.), there is a possibility that your mole represents an early stage of skin cancer and should be examined immediately by a physician.

Mole removal can be done with a laser or by incision. Healing from either process typically takes about 10 days.

Nose Surgery

Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a procedure that is designed to modify nearly any aspect of the nose. Depending on your wishes, rhinoplasty can be used to modify bumps in the nose, the shape of the nose tip, the size of the nostrils, the width of the nose tip or bridge, or the angle between the nose and lips.

  • Rhinoplasty may be purely cosmetic or may be used to treat injuries or breathing disorders. There are some limitations on how much the nose can be reduced in size.

Surgery on the nose is typically done under general anaesthesia, though some procedures can be performed with a local anaesthetic. Surgeons will usually be able to hide scars by making any necessary incisions from inside the nasal cavities, or along the septum that divides the 2 nostrils.

After surgery, you may be provided with a special brace to protect the nose while it heals. Most patients find that swelling and bruising begins to fade on the fourth day after surgery and will be gone before 2 weeks have passed. It may take several weeks for irritants such as bleeding noses or painful experiences when blowing the nose to fully disappear.

Most patients can return to work or school within 3 days of their surgery. In some cases, your surgeon may advise you not to wear glasses or sunglasses for a period of time after the procedure to ensure that your nose can heal properly.

Scar Revision

Patients considering a scar revision procedure should know that no scar can completely fade. However, there are procedures that can make scars less visible, less unsightly, and essentially less noticeable than they were originally.

Many types of scars will naturally fade and come to match the hue of the surrounding skin over the course of several years. Therefore, it is always advisable that you give a fresh scar time to naturally heal before considering a surgical procedure.

  • If your scarring is large, fibrous, and itchy, it may be a keloid scar. Keloid scars can often be treated with a series of injections to reduce the swelling and itching, and possibly even to shrink the scar itself.

If injections to the scar tissue fail to sufficiently reduce the scarring, keloid scars can be worked on surgically. Any incisions will also form scars, but these should be smaller and neater than the keloid scar they are replacing. Keloid scars can return and you may require additional treatments.

Hypertrophic scars are similar to keloid scars but are smaller and will more closely resemble the shape of the original injury that caused the scar to form. The treatment of a hypertrophic scar is very similar to the treatment of a keloid scar.

If a scar has resulted from losing a portion of flesh—for example, scarring caused by large wounds or severe burns—it may pull the surrounding tissues more tightly together in a contracture scar. Contracture scars can restrict movement or cause discomfort in some patients, depending on where they are located, their size, and what tissues are affected. A contracture scar is usually treated by replacing the scarred skin with a larger section of grafted skin, relieving the constriction and pressure on the area.

Thigh, Hip, and Buttock Lift

A thigh lift may be a solution for patients who are seeking help to treat difficult-to-lose deposits of fat around the upper legs and buttocks, or for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight. For patients seeking treatment for fatty deposits around the thighs and buttocks (which are typically not responsive to diet and exercise), a thigh lift combined with some liposuction can give you a leaner and fitter appearance with firmer, more youthful skin.

  • If you have successfully lost a significant amount of weight, you may find that the skin around your thighs and buttocks is loose, sagging, or prone to wrinkles and “orange peeling” due to the excess of tissue. Such a condition can lead to rash, irritation, or infection.

A thigh lift reduces the appearance of the excess skin that can accumulate on our upper legs when we have large fat deposits in the region. It can be combined with liposuction to reduce appearance of fat deposits as well.

Each patient is different, and your procedure may be focused solely on the thighs or may extend to the hips, groin, or buttocks depending on the extent of the work and the desired outcome. In most cases, incisions (and subsequent scars) can be hidden in the natural creases and contours of the body to be as invisible as possible after healing.

Because these procedures are on a highly muscular area, bruising and swelling can be significant in the days after the procedure. Patients are advised to only exert as much effort as is comfortable.

In most instances, typical light activities (walking, work, and school) can be resumed between 3 and 10 days after the procedure. Strenuous exercise, such as running or jogging, must be avoided for 2 to 3 months to ensure full and safe healing of the legs.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) is intended to reduce the appearance of sagging skin around the belly caused by a lifetime of changing body shapes and a weakening of the connective tissue that gives young skin a taut appearance. The removal of this skin is intended to give the patients a firmer, flatter appearance to the abdominal region. Anyone considering pregnancy may want to postpone their surgery until the shape of their body has stabilized.

  • The abdominoplasty procedure should not be taken lightly because it is a major surgical procedure. The extent of the surgery being performed on a patient determines how long the procedure lasts. Typically, a surgery will range from 2 to 5 hours.

An incision in the shape of a lazy W is made in the lower abdomen from hipbone to hipbone. The surgeon then tightens the abdominal muscles by stitching them into a new position, and then reattaches the skin removing any excess. This results in a firm abdomen.

Patients with especially extensive procedures may require hospitalization. However, most patients are able to go home on the day of the surgery in the care of family or friends. Depending on the individual patient, the extent of the surgery, and how you heal, you may be able to return to work in anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks.

While healing, moderate exercise (not painful or vigorous) must be done to aid in healing and to prevent blood clots or overly-tight muscles from developing. Scars will form along the lines of the incisions, but they are usually not visible under clothing or bathing suits.

Your scars may take up to 9 months to fully heal, so don’t panic if they seem excessively noticeable in the first 3 to 6 months. This is normal.

Patients who have a massive weight loss (>100 lbs) through surgery, diet, or exercise will need a more extensive procedure. This could include flank incision or lower body lift. The time needed as well as the costs will increase.

Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is known more commonly as eyelid surgery. It is a procedure that is designed to reduce the appearance of excess fat, skin, or muscle from the areas around the eyes and is intended to give patients a more youthful, alert, and healthy appearance.

  • Blepharoplasty is intended to reduce the appearance of heavy sagging deposits of fat above and below the eyes that may make you look older, sadder, or more tired than you are, or which may impair your vision. The procedure can often be combined with other work such as a facelift or brow lift designed to give the patient a revitalized facial appearance.

The procedure is simple and can take about an hour for upper or lower lids. Small incisions are made either in the creases of the eyes or on the inside surface of the eyelid. In both cases, scarring is almost invisible.

After carefully removing fat deposits from the upper and lower eyelids, the incisions are closed with fine stitches. After your surgery, you may be prescribed an ointment or eye drops for your own comfort. Stitches are typically removed within a week, after which you will find bruising and swelling decreases.

The amount of bruising and swelling and the time it takes to recess varies from patient to patient. Many patients find that the majority of bruising and swelling has recessed 1 to 2 weeks after removing the stitches. Most people can return to work or school in about 10 days.

Your surgeon will advise you on your limitations after surgery. For the first couple of days, you may find it difficult to read or watch television. You may not be able to wear contact lenses for several weeks.

Any athletic sports or heart-rate-raising activities should be avoided for at least a week following your procedure.
